Ohana

"Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind, or forgotten."

The Lilo and Stitch movie is clear on their goal to children, however it is an ideal that should be stressed. No matter if you are upset with your sister because she took your favorite shirt out of your closest without asking, or your brother is making fun of you when you're on the phone with the girlfriend/boyfriend, or you decide to 'hate' your parents because they force you to something you don't want to do; at the end of the day, your family is apart of you and they will always be there.

In the post below (about The Lion King) I discuss the disappointment from parents when we mess up and Ohana continues that post. No matter how upset we are at an aunt not texting enough, an uncle missing one of your recitals, your father not spending more time at home, or an argument with your mom, family will love you unconditionally. Every family definitively has their moments but at the end of the day, they will help you from the ditch you dug.

The Lion King

Traits, skills, beliefs, and characteristics of our parents live on through their children. Simba learns that he can't run away from who he really is, the man his father taught him to be -during the time he had-. He feels ashamed of his mistakes and pushes them under the rug so he doesn't have to deal with them. When he is reminded of his responsibilities and gains a little faith he is able to push past his mistake.

As children growing up, we are incredibly scared of upsetting our parents when/if we mess up. Most of the time, we forget that our parents were inexperienced teenagers or college students once and made their own mistakes. We look up to our parents and believe they are perfect because they are our role models. Even when they tell us a story from their past, about them messing up, we think "My mom?/My dad?... Nahhhh" (haha, its very true!)
We are disappointed in ourselves when we make a mistake because we know our parents will be disappointed and that is the last thing we want to do.
In The Lion King, we learn that we can't run away when we make a mistake, we must face it and grow from it. Yes, we will get that horrible disappointed face from our parents but trying to forget your mistake wont lead you into a better you.

LEARN FROM IT.. 

Brushing Your Teeth!

For me personally, I used to hate brushing my teeth! Toothpaste isn't tasty or delicious, it's just ecky. Then I watched Monsters Inc. and it changed my viewed. This whole scene is about the main Monster's getting ready for work; they wake up on time, brush their teeth, work out, and eat their breakfast! This shows little kids that princesses aren't they only ones that care about their health and looks, Monsters do as well and so should we!
I also think this scene focuses more on males. Normally you wont see a boy sitting own to watch a Princess movie (unless he's stuck with his little sister)- but you probably will see a little boy watching Cars or Monster's Inc. And with the help of Monsters Inc, boys need to know that no matter how 'cool' they are, their health is very important!

What Disney has Taught Us

We Don't Have To Do Everything Alone

When looking back at Disney's major movies, we see that Disney taught us we don't have to do everything alone. In almost every movie our hero/main character has a friend (or two) that helps them conquer their task! People believe that we must do everything alone because depending on others is too risky. On the other hand, people depend on their friends to do everything for them, never growing themselves. Disney's movies express the correct balance- that things don't have to be as difficult as them seem! We don't have to conquer everything alone. Terrible dilemmas such as going through a  divorce, losing a loved one, losing your job and small dilemmas like getting bad grades, losing a valuable item, getting lost, or simply having a bad day - having a friend will make those situations easier to handle. Everyone needs a true friend! Don't believe you have to defeat everything yourself, let a friend hold your hand as you both master each step. :)

Informational..

Starting out as a Freshman in college, one of my prerequisites of graduation is of course English! One of my requirements is a blog; to keep up with the posts, entice an audience and to keep you guys coming! So for my blog I will be watching a Disney movie a week, requested by you guys :) and I will post what I believe is a negative or positive influence for our next generation. I have heard so many displeasing parents comment about the new TV programs the Disney channel now show and I have to completely agree! The difference from the classic movies/shows and now is horrendous and that is my goal for this blog. Lets bring back the "good old days". Hopefully you guys will get a kick out of my comments, videos/pictures I will be posting gradually :D I know these type of topics can get very heated so lets keep our comments in the "nice zone".
